Hello, I’m Jasvinder Singh, born in Calcutta, West Bengal, in 1962. I graduated from Jamia Millia Islamia University with a degree in Fine Arts in 1985. Initially, I aspired to be a painter, but life had other plans for me. My journey into photography began when I received my first camera from my father after finishing school. His passion for photography was infectious and I soon found myself captivated by the art of capturing moments through the lens.
During a photography workshop in my second semester, my interest in the field deepened significantly. It was at this point that I decided to shift my major to photography, guided by a newfound passion. The transformative moment came when my instructor told me, “You’ve got a good eye, kid. You should consider making this your profession. I believe you have a future in it.” That affirmation was a turning point and I resolved to pursue photography as my lifelong career.
Upon graduation, I began working as a Visualiser at T-Series, which provided me with a stable income. In 1987, I invested my savings into purchasing my first professional camera and established my own Graphic and Photography Studio. The excitement of owning a professional camera was exhilarating. I began capturing everything from macro shots of flowers and tiny creatures to nature, events and portraits.
My work involved designing and printing packaging, advertisements and labels for various brands, alongside photographing commercial products. Realizing that the quality of my work wasn’t limited by my gear but by my skills, I dedicated countless hours to improving my craft. I engaged in numerous shoots each month, consumed tutorials on lighting and Photoshop and applied these lessons to my work.
By 2015, I had invested thousands of hours into photography that year alone. Reflecting on my progress, I recognized that this was just the beginning of my journey. Photography, for me, is a continuous process of self-discovery, marked by achievements and setbacks. It embodies the persistence to keep shooting and a vision to transform the world, one photograph at a time.
The acquisition of a 360 camera marked a significant shift in my approach. The ability to alter reality through this technology opened up new creative possibilities and I eagerly explored innovative ways to use it.
In the end, success in photography lies in staying true to oneself. Authenticity and uniqueness are the keys to standing out. The only competition you face is with yourself. With my camera, passion and a desire to reveal the beauty in every subject, I’ve learned that these are the essential elements for creating meaningful and impactful work.
